Dr. Mor Athanasious Eliyas ( born Eliyas on 13 April 1964) is a Syriac Orthodox bishop. He currently, is the President of Antiochean Faith Movement in India & Vicar General of the St. Athanasius Cathedral at the Puthencuriz.

Early years

Dr. Mor Athanasious Eliyas was born, in the Kozhiparambath family of Thuruthisserry in Angamali, to Mr. Ittoop (late) and Eliyamma on 13 April 1964. The family belonged to the Akaparambu Mor Sabor Afroth church in Angamali diocese.

Education

He had his schooling at the Nedumbasserry Mar Athanasious School and college education at the Angamali DePaul College. His Grace pursued theological studies under Very Rev. Ramban Geevarghese Karimbil (Metropolitan Mor Dionysius Geevarghese) at Mor Ignatius Monastery, Manjanikkara.

Ordination

On 22 July 1988 H.G. Mor Dionysius Thomas ordained him as Deacon (Korooyo) and on 15 January 1995 he was ordained as priest (Kassisso).On 2 November 2002, Kassisso Eliyas was elevated to the order of Ramban (Dayroyo) by Catholicos Mor Baselios Thomas I at the Mor Sabor Afroth church in Akaparambu. In November 2006 he was elected to the highest priestly order of the Metropolitan and the decision was later ratified by the Malankara Synod, Working Committee, Managing Committee, the Catholicos and the Patriarch. On Monday the 1st January 2007, His Beatitude the Catholicos Mor Baselios Thomas I ordained Rabban Eliyas as Metropolitan by name ATHANASIOUS at a solemn function held at the St. Athanasius Cathedral, Puthencuriz.

The Patriarchal assistant to India, His Grace Mor Athansius Geevarghese, Metropolitans of various dioceses in Malankara (Kerala), Their Graces, Dr. Abraham Mor Severious (Angamali region), Mor Polycarpus Geevarghese (E.A,E.), Joseph Mor Gregorios (Kochi), Dr. Mor Ivanios Mathews (Kandanad), Mor Dionysius Geevarghese (Simhasana churches), Dr. Mor Theophilos Kuriakose (Seminary & Europe), Archbishop Mor Severios Kuriakose (Knanaya Archdiocese), Mor Theodosius Mathews (Kollam), Mathews Mor Aphrem (High Range region), Mor Eusebius Kuriakose (Thrissur), Dr. Geevarghese Mor Coorilose (Niranam) and Mor Chrysostmos Markose (E.A.E.) were the co-celebrants during the holy consecration ceremony. The Metropolitan-designate of Knanaya diocese Rev. Fr. C T Kurian Chaluparambil (later Mor Gregorios Kuriakose), priests from various Malankara dioceses, Ministers of State of Kerala, Mr. S Sharma and Chevalier Dr. T. U. Kuruvilla, several Members of Kerala Legislative Assembly and other local government representatives were all present during the holy ceremony.

On April 15, 2007, the enthronement ceremony (Sunthroniso) of Metropolitan Dr. Mor Athanasious Elias was held at the Mor Sabor Mor Aphroth Church at Akaparambu. Catholicos Aboon Mor Baselios Thomas I was the chief celebrant and Metropolitans Mor Gregorios Joseph and Mor Chrysostmos Markose were the co-celebrants during the holy ceremony. His Grace henceforth was appointed as the President of the Antiochean Movement in India and vicar-general of St. Athanasius Cathedral at Puthencuriz Patriarchal center. The Malankara Episcopal Synod held in May 2007 gave His Grace the additional charge of the Malankara Clergy Association.

As a priest

As a priest he had served the churches at Vadattupara St. George Church, Aymuri St. Thomas Church, Neduvathoor St. George Church, Peechanikad Mount Tabor Church, Angamali St. Mary's Cathedral, Ernakulam St. Peter's Church and Thuruthissery Simhsana Church. For a brief period he had also served as the secretary of Metropolitan Dr. Mor Dionysius Thomas (present Catholicos).

As a metropolitan

His Grace henceforth was appointed as the President of the Antiochean Movement in India and vicar-general of St. Athanasius Cathedral at Puthencuriz Patriarchal center. The Malankara Episcopal Synod held in May 2007 gave His Grace the additional charge of the Malankara Clergy Association. Dr. Athanasious also serves as the President of Malankara Evangelical Association, President of Malankara Jacobite Syrian Sunday School Association, Manager of Mar Athanasious Upper Primary School, Thuruthissery and Chairperson of Women Welfare Institute, under Antiochean Movement at Thuruthissery. Dr. Athanasious’ humanitarian works among the poor and needy in the society and His Grace’s Jail Ministry are really commendable.
